M
ental health matters are making
headlines these days, from stories
of people devastated by anxiety
and depression to news about the impacts
of stress disorders, substance abuse and
dementia.
But help is on the way, says the Canadian
Mental Health Association. New programs
aimed at helping Manitobans find support
and care for their mental health issues are
starting to gain traction here, including a
so-called Recovery College, established by
the CMHA as a place where anyone can go
"The courses offered
help with mental health
literacy, mental health
promotions and social
connections."

to learn more about mental health.
The CMHA’s Marion Cooper says the
College has courses for everyone—not
only those dealing with their own mental health issues, but friends or relatives
and members of community groups and
service organizations who want to gain a
deeper understanding of mental health.
“The courses offered help with mental
health literacy, mental health promotions
and social connections. Various topics are
covered like insight on depression, learning about building relationships and having healthy relationships,” CMHA’s Sean
Miller says.
Courses are offered through the college
and through learning centres. Organizations such as NorWest Co-op Community
Health are taking courses through the Recovery College and helping deliver them
to the community, expanding the number
of locations available to people wanting to
learn about mental health.
There are five Recovery Colleges in Canada so far, including Portage La Prairie, Winkler and Winnipeg. “Something about Canadians—and particularly Manitobans—is
that we’re very innovative," says Cooper.
The CMHA hopes to add 20 more within
the next year.
