MIND THE GAP IN
UNPAID LABOUR
Women are doing 21 hours more
unpaid work per week than men,
according to the latest annual
Household, Income and Labour
Dynamics in Australia (HILDA)
survey, a nationally representative
study involving interviews with
17,500 people across 9500
households.
Housework has been found to
make up the largest proportion of
unpaid work, followed by caring for
children, with the amount of unpaid

work growing sharply after the birth
of a first child.
Women also feel more timestressed than men, according to the
survey, with 38 per cent saying they
are time-stressed “often” or “almost
always”. The proportion of men who
report the same level of time-stress
has declined from 34 per cent in
2002 to 29 per cent today.
