TECHNOLOGY
ORIENTATION
Welcome to the April issue of INTHEBLACK.
With technologies emerging and evolving at a rapid rate,
CPA Australia is committed to supporting members and the
profession to adapt. We want to make it as easy as possible for
practitioners to understand what technological developments
mean for them, their practices and organisations, and their future.
While new technologies offer enormous potential for organisations
to add value and enhance productivity, efficiencies and overall
competitiveness, they are not without challenges and risks.
We know from consultation with members that many businesses
are uncertain how best to adopt and manage the implementation of
technologies. Recent CPA Australia research, Strategies for Managing
Barriers to Technology Adoption, shows that technology-related
barriers, especially those relating to data security and data privacy,
are major concerns for many organisations.
Other significant barriers relate to organisational issues such
as management and staff support, compatibility, information
technology systems support and orientation to technology. Perhaps
surprisingly, cost was not considered a major barrier to technology
adoption among those surveyed.
Read more about these barriers and strategic solutions to help
organisations successfully adopt new technology, here.
Also in the technology space, CPA Australia has called on the
Federal Government to make digital financial reporting mandatory
for listed companies. Our recently published research suggests that
maintaining a voluntary approach to digital financial reporting is
stifling the uptake of digital reporting in Australia. Mandatory digital
financial reporting will have many benefits for companies, investors,
regulators and capital markets.
A reminder that CPA Australia’s Annual General Meeting will be
held on 11 May at 5.30pm AEST. We are a member organisation, and
this is an important opportunity for members to have their say.
The AGM will take place at the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney.
We have contingency plans in place in the event that COVID-19
restrictions require a change of venue. We hope this is not necessary,
but we will communicate any change to members ahead of the AGM.
CPA Australia will maintain the innovations introduced progressively
since 2019. We have taken steps to use technology to enable
members to view the AGM via livestream and to ask questions online
during the meeting. In line with the Corporations Act amendments
introduced, those voting members present in the meeting online
will be able to vote. Instructions on how to do so will be included in
the dedicated AGM website before the AGM. Members will still be
able to submit proxies online ahead of the meeting, whether you
are planning to attend in person or watch via the webcast, and we
encourage you to do so.
More details are available on the website.
