In this interesting TED Talk, leadership expert
Dorie Clark asks why so many people feel
chronically busy yet are not achieving as
much as they would like. Clark points to an
excess of meetings and the flood of emails
as factors, but says the real reason is that we
often subconsciously equate busyness with
personal worth. It can also be a way of avoiding
important questions, such as whether you are
in the right job or organisation. Take a step
back and consider your busyness, she suggests.
After all, no one ever died wishing they had
spent more time at the office.

The Australian jobs picture has become more complicated due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a
report based on a comprehensive survey, The Great X, from recruitment firm Michael Page. The number of
resignations and planned resignations has increased markedly, making talent retention a priority. However,
simply offering more money is not the answer: employees also seek flexibility in work arrangements, policies
on wellbeing and a culture that is suitable for them. Companies must be willing to offer career path guidance
and relevant training if they want to attract and keep the people they need for growth.

Accounting giant Deloitte sponsored
the recent Australian Financial Review
Banking Summit, and this blog post by
David Myers, the firm’s national banking
and capital markets leader, outlines the
key issues addressed. These are the global
financial impact of the Ukraine conflict,
climate change and how the corporate
sector should respond, improving banking
services to disadvantaged people and
groups, the growth of digitisation, new
payment systems, and the broad economic
outlook for Australia. Serious challenges,
but Myers notes that the banking sector
has proven to be remarkably resilient.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre
(ACSC) has released new guidance on
the reporting of critical cyber security
incidents. Regulated entities, under Part
2b of the Security of Critical Infrastructure
Act 2018, may be subject to mandatory
incident reporting requirements. The
guidance notes that if an affected
organisation becomes aware that an
incident has occurred and it has had a
significant impact on the organisation’s
assets, the ACSC must be notified within
12 hours. If the report is made verbally,
there must be a follow-up report in
writing. A template for reporting is
provided as well as information on the
ACSC hotline.
The metaverse, often seen as the next
step in the evolution of the web, is still
a mystery to many people in business,
according to a new report from consulting
firm McKinsey. Despite this, it has already
attracted over US$120 billion (A$177
billion) in investments, and the pace is
accelerating. This report, Value Creation
in the Metaverse, suggests that the
metaverse has the potential to generate
up to US$5 trillion (A$7.4 trillion) in
value by 2030. Aside from the report,
there is a series of articles that unpacks
the metaverse in non-technical terms
and a podcast discussion that examines
strategies for businesses to capture
emerging opportunities.
