ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT
Global finance giant EY has named JungJin Seo, founder
and chair of the biopharmaceutical firm Celltrion Group
in South Korea, as its 2021 World Entrepreneur of the
Year. The company has developed low-cost drugs to
treat cancer, autoimmune diseases and COVID-19.
Seo started Celltrion in 2003 and soon spotted the
potential of biosimilars, medical products highly similar
to approved drugs. Celltrion has also recently developed
an effective antibody treatment for COVID-19, sold at
production cost.
“Entrepreneurship to me has always been about
bringing together a group of people working for a
common vision, embracing challenges as opportunities
and contributing to the greater good,” he says.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS
HerBusiness is designed as an online platform for women in business to exchange experiences, advice and
information. There is a blog section, which provides profiles of successful women, and a podcast series hosted
by site CEO and founder, Suzi Dafnis, aimed at helping women grow their companies. The discussion about
using social media for business development is particularly interesting. There are also roundtable events,
webinars and training courses connected to the site. The focus is mainly on women managing or starting a small
or medium-sized business, but there is useful material on career and personal development as well.

PwC’s report, Australian Entertainment and
Media Outlook 2021-2025, indicates that the
pandemic has accelerated trends already evident
in the entertainment and media industry. The
cinema business has been hit hard, while digital
streaming has boomed, as has online advertising
revenue. The games sector has done well,
pushed along by new platform releases. In terms
of information media, consumers are moving
away from print and television news. Many
young people have limited interest in media as
traditionally conceived and delivered, preferring
customised sites. These trends are likely to
continue into 2022 and beyond, consolidating
structural changes around digital, on-demand,
mobile entertainment and information.

Imposter syndrome, says this interesting article
on the site of recruitment firm SEEK, is the
feeling that you are not capable of doing your
job, and that you will eventually be found out.
SEEK survey data suggests that about half
of us experience this feeling at some time in
our career. Aside from self-doubt and anxiety,
other signs of imposter syndrome include
procrastination, perfectionism, avoidance,
over-commitment and blaming others.
As a positive response, the article suggests
regular self-assessments, avoiding comparisons
and documenting successes. Speaking about
impostor syndrome openly with colleagues is
also useful, as other people are likely to have
had a similar experience.

The World Bank collects huge amounts
of social, economic and financial data,
and much of it can be downloaded from
its website. Searching can be done by
indicator, country or region, and there
are pre-formatted tables and reports
that are updated regularly. Aside from
the open data catalogue, there is a
databank visualisation tool that allows
for the construction of time series of
information, a microdata library that
provides survey data from households
and businesses, and a news section on
recent developments. All this adds up to
useful resources to inform a presentation
or add extra depth to a research report.
