UNDERREPRESENTED
Indigenous Australians remain vastly under-represented or excluded from the
workforce, with Minderoo Foundation’s Indigenous Employment Index 2022
showing that only 5 per cent of its participating employers fall into the highestperforming category in terms of Indigenous employment practices and outcomes.
The first comprehensive snapshot of Indigenous workplace representation,
practices and employee experiences to be carried out in Australia, the research
finds Indigenous employees are almost entirely absent from senior management
and executive leadership levels. It also shows that authentic commitments, tailored
strategies with targets and a broader definition of Indigenous employment success
are critical to better Indigenous employment outcomes.
As of 2018, less than half (49.1 per cent) of working-age Indigenous Australians
were in some form of employment, compared to 75.9 per cent for non-Indigenous
Australians. The Minderoo Foundation report shows that the gap closed by just
1.3 per cent during the decade to 2018.
