ADVOCACY
THROUGH
THOUGHT
LEADERSHIP
Welcome to the May issue of INTHEBLACK.
CPA Australia’s Integrated Report 2021 was published
last month. I encourage you to read about our year
that was.
The report outlines the substantial program of
policy and advocacy work we undertook last year.
Pleasingly, it highlights that you found these activities
valuable. The member satisfaction rating for policy
and advocacy increased to 6.93 out of 10 for 2021,
up from 6.80 in 2020.
As part of its advocacy for the profession last
year, CPA Australia engaged extensively with
governments, regulators and standard-setters to
shape the development and administration of laws,
regulations, policies and programs, among others.
These relationships enable us to better represent
members on matters of importance to them.
Internationally, we increased our engagement
with government agencies in key markets, engaging
with Hong Kong’s Inland Revenue Department and
Financial Reporting Council, New Zealand’s Inland
Revenue Department and Financial Markets Authority
and Malaysia’s Inland Revenue Board and Royal
Malaysian Customs Department.
We also provided international members with
analysis on budgets in Hong Kong SAR, Malaysia,
New Zealand and Singapore. This was in addition
to our Australian federal budget coverage and
commentary on each Australian state and
territory budget.
We made 163 formal submissions to governments,
standards-setters and regulators. Of course, this
is in addition to the large number of informal
engagements we undertake with key stakeholders
each year. We also released 21 publications on a
variety of topics.
We hosted 33 policy and advocacy events,
featuring experts from across the accounting and
finance profession. These attracted more than
14,270 member registrations.

“We’re now well into the
process of developing
the next CPA Australia
organisational strategy,
which is being codesigned in partnership
with members at every
stage. The new strategy
will include taking a
leading focus on
advocacy globally, and
will address the key
trends impacting
members and the
profession.”
We also produced 36 podcast episodes on policy
and advocacy topics in 2021. On average, these
achieved 1800 downloads per podcast, with a total of
41,400 downloads. Our policy podcasts have recently
been reimagined as our weekly With Interest podcast.
These short episodes of about 15 minutes will help
keep you up to date with current developments.
We’re now well into the process of developing the
next CPA Australia organisational strategy, which is
being co-designed in partnership with members
at every stage. The new strategy will include taking
a leading focus on advocacy globally, and will
address the key trends impacting members and
the profession.
Over the past two months, we have held an
extensive series of focus groups and member
strategy workshops to capture the strategy needs
and priorities of approximately 1000 members.
CPA Australia will continue sharing regular updates
on the progress of the strategy, including when you
can attend our CEO strategy webinars to share a final
draft view of the strategy later this year. You can find
out more on our website.
