Sustainability is on the agenda of
companies across Australia, but a

emissions target.

The Accelerating the Journey to
Net Zero: A Blueprint for Australia
report, prepared by the University
of London in partnership with
Microsoft, includes a survey of
686 business leaders and 1030 fulltime employees. It found that threequarters of Australian companies
have set a target of achieving
net zero emissions by 2050, and
58 per cent have reduced their
emissions, mainly through the use
of renewable energy. However,
it estimates that 34 per cent of
Australian organisations will fail to
achieve their net zero targets due
to a lack of skills, underinvestment
in technology, poor government
policy, and poor leadership.
“If you just think that you’re
going to set a goal for 2050 and
in 2049 you’ll just wake up and
it’ll have been solved for you, I
think you’re going to be in for a
rude surprise,” says Lucas Joppa,
Microsoft’s chief environmental
officer. “Any company that thinks
that achieving a net zero target that
they’ve set for themselves will be
considered voluntary is also going
to be finding themselves sorely
mistaken.”
