If the Mississippi River were to shut down,
it would shatter the world’s economy.
Pilots move ships 365 days a year, 24 hours a day because the
transportation on the Mississippi River is critical to the commercial
infrastructure of the United States.

The pilot ladder is one of the more
dangerous parts of the job, but it’s
still the best way for a pilot to board
and disembark a moving vessel.
Using a pilot ladder can be a very dangerous and risky
procedure, especially under icy winter rains, dense fog, or strong
winds. At times the rigging by the ship’s crew is not acceptable
or up to safe standards and must be taken into consideration
during the transfer.
