In order to provide protection from accidents on the river and to
keep the business of the river flowing, lawmakers require ship
owners to pay local pilots to board and navigate foreign vessels
as soon as they enter the river system.
Even though no local dollars are
used to pay for pilot services,
pilots are commissioned by the
governor and are regulated by
the State of Louisiana.

Entering and departing the river is handled by
the Associated Branch Pilots. Crescent River
Port Pilots navigate the middle 106 miles
of the river, and New Orleans Baton Rouge
Steamship Pilots move and shift vessels
between New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
