DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY
IN URBAN PLANNING
AND POLICY
RESEARCH AND ENGAGEMENT
THAT TRANSFORMS CITIES
“
I wanted a PhD program
that would combine
rigorous research with deep
engagement of the practitioner
community. The PhD program in
Urban Planning and Policy at CUPPA
checked off both those boxes, and
then some!

UPP PhD Student
Pursuing a doctorate in urban planning and policy at UIC means
engaging in the highest levels of research, teaching, and practice
to understand and address pressing urban issues such as the
persistence of poverty and the sustainability of urban environments.
The Urban Planning and Policy PhD program has one of the most
innovative and forward-looking curricula in community-engaged urban
research in the nation, focusing on issues such as transportation,
housing, financialization, organizing, economic development, racial
and gender equity, and more. The Program provides a unique and
powerful resource for the advanced study of challenging urban
problems and their complex remedies, covering a breadth of subjects,
analytic methods, and practical skills that are required to be effective
researchers in a rapidly urbanizing world.
PhD students receive high-touch mentoring and learn how to conduct
applied research with faculty who are vanguards in their fields and
with the multiple research centers within the College of Urban
Planning and Public Affairs.
