UPSTREAM EMISSIONS
Purchased goods and services: It includes all upstream (i.e., cradle-to-gate) emissions from the
production of products purchased by STEFFCA in 2021. STEFFCA accounts for 67% of all purchased goods (tangible products) and for 100% of all purchased services (intangible products).
The spend-based method was used for both purchased goods and purchased services, using the
database Exiobase 3. This category accounted for the lion’s share of the emissions of STEFFCA,
as it includes tonnes of different products made from materials that require energy intensive
processing.
Capital goods: This subcategory was calculated by the spend-based method, using the monetary
database Exiobase 3 and it included the emissions for producing a digital cutter, a trailer for a car,
a storage shelf, and a floor cleaner.
Employee commuting: This subcategory includes the emissions generated from employee
commutes between the workplace and home. At STEFFCA around 85% of the commutes took
place via car. The rest were done via cycling, while one employee used a moped. The emission
factors used for this distance-based method were from EEA (European Environmental Agency)
and TUMI.
Transportation and Distribution: The emission factors were calculated assuming land transportation within Denmark, sea transportation from China, and the Eurostat modal split of inland
freight transport for transportation within the EU. This was the second most polluting subcategory, mainly due to the shipping of products from China.
