Outside of haircare, you've branded
MuuMuu's. What a vibe! Can you tell us where
the MuuMuu empire was born?
The Muumuu Mafia was born out of a very tough
time in my life. My husband and I have been on a
journey trying to conceive, and during that
journey, I discovered that I had fibroids. While
trying to go through the IVF process and different
things to help with fertility ultimately we decided
it was best for me to get my fibroids removed.
While recovering from that surgery at the end of
2020 and through the first half of 2021, I fell in
love with muumuus because I did not want
anything any kind of uncomfortable clothing or
materials to touch me.
As I began to recover and do what I’ve always
loved to do, which is just be me unapologetically
on my various social media platforms, I would
get so many people inquiring about my
muumuus, where I get them from, and wanting
to have some of their own, and many people
saying I should start my own muumuu line, so
that’s what I did. The Muumuu Mafia is truly a
labor of love and community and another safe
space for us by us. And I don’t think anything
could be more perfect and align better with The
Beauty Nomad.
I love that! And speaking of being you
unapologetically, one of the things I cherish
most about you is your authenticity and your
ability to always show up as 100% you. Could
you explain how that has catapulted your
career for the better and why it is important to
simply be yourself?
I honestly don’t know how to be anyone else
because, from a very young age, I’ve always been
confident, bold, outspoken, funny, silly, and
courageous. When I look back at pictures and
videos of myself, I see exactly who I am today and
I’m just thankful to God that I never let society
and what other people have to say about me
stop me from being who I truly am and meant to
be. So many people are miserable and unhappy
because they’re not being themselves
authentically, they’re not doing the things they
really want to do. While I know that sometimes
life is hard and we can’t do everything the way
we think we would’ve liked to, as long as you’re
staying genuine and true to yourself, you’ll be
able to find joy in whatever it is life tosses at you.
Being me has led to unbelievable opportunities,
and I truly believe that right now the world is
going through a shift and people are searching
for motivation and inspiration to be themselves
unapologetically or to step out on faith or to try
something different, and most importantly to not
let the opinions of others weigh them down.
I truly believe God made me this way and being
me unapologetically is an act of perseverance
and an act of resilience in this world where black
women, especially plus-size black women, big
afro-having, loudmouth, bold, black women are
not as celebrated or seen. I’m going to keep
showing up as me authentically and
unapologetically in hopes of changing that.
Period.
