What is the best way to handle hair with
more than one curl pattern?
I’ve never met anyone that only has one curl
pattern. I style the hair with the same products
throughout the head. Most time people have a
dryer area of head in the top, back, or center
of the head. For that section I make sure I am
very thorough in cleansing, conditioning, and
styling that area. I might even go back over it
to smooth that section right before I place the
client under the dryer. I also accommodate
hair with multiple curl patterns by cutting the
hair in it’s curly state.
When it comes to the curl type hair chart,
do you love it or do you have a different
way to differentiate curls and textures?
I don’t subscribe to the curl chart.

I don’t subscribe to the curl chart. The curl
chart doesn’t tell me anything about the curls
that is beneficial for styling, therefore it doesn’t
help me educate my clients. In addition, the
curl chart isn’t an honest assessment of the
hair. I’m more concerned with the other
essential elements of the hair. I talk to my
clients about their essential elements and how
they play apart in their process. Things that
matter to me more than the diameter of a curl
is the hairs ability to absorb moisture according
to the condition of the cuticle (porosity). The
density of the hair. The elasticity of the hair.
The hydration level of the hair. The climate the
client lives in. Life style, water quality, texture,
and surface texture of the hair. Getting my
clients to understand their essentials elements
empowers them to know what and how to use
anything on their hair, and understand what
possibilities are and are not available to them.
doesn’t help me educate my clients.
