Being a licensed cosmetologist for 15+
years, what changes have you seen in the
industry since first starting?
In the last 15 years, I've seen the industry
change drastically. The way that we
market and sell our brands look so much
different today than it did almost 2
decades ago. We've gone to almost 100%
digital or to social media indefinitely.
Gone are the days that require boots in
the mud or outreach marketing. Face-toface in-person connections. We were in
the malls, grocery store, gym, lounges, etc
building and networking. Don't stray too
far away from that.
What advice do you have for the next
generation of hairstylists who may want
to do natural hair but feel the market is
"oversaturated"? That word has been
used a lot in the last few years. What can
you tell them?
My advice is probably to be unique and
authentic. Truth is, every industry is
saturated but great brands find ways to
pull away from their competitors. Be
inspired and stay innovative. We live in a
society of group thinkers with copycat
marketing. Authenticity is rare. I'm not
looking at anything that's happening to
the right or left of me. Just straight ahead.
If you have an offering to give to the
world, dig into that creative bag and carve
out a lane where there is no traffic.
