Editor's Note
Let me just start by saying wow! Already we
have reached our one year anniversary of
Deeper Than Hair Magazine! I want to thank
each and every one of you for reading our
Black beauty stories! It’s "kiddie perm" of
you we can keep going. You are
appreciated!
I was raised to believe that my hair was very
"hard to tame" and to this very day, I am
ridiculously tender-headed. Being raised by
my Great-Grandmother she did not want to
deal with it. She was already 72 years old
when she got full custody of me so having a
little screaming child every time she even
remotely touched my head was a no-go. So
by the age of 6, I got my first Vigarol to
loosen my natural texture. By 12 I was
upgraded to a Just for Me "kiddie perm". By
16 I used Precise. My Mom used to buy us
Precise because there were two jars in a
box. One for me and one for her! By 19 I was
working in a salon as an assistant while I
paid for cosmetology school out of pocket.
Most of our clients only get one relaxer a
year. Preferably at the top of June so it could
be fresh for the summer months. Our blow
dry and press technique kept the hair
straight throughout the rest of the year. Once
I started getting acquainted with everyone’s
natural curl patterns, I let them know they
didn't need a relaxer. Slowly but surely all of
our clients stopped getting relaxed. By 30 I
then started to get into the role that heat was
playing on the bonds of my client's hair.
Those who were open to it allowed me to talk
them into stretching the time in between
salon visits to keep their hair stronger but
per usual I had to start with myself. I had one
of my talented Deeper Than Hair Stylists,
Ashley, and my friend, curl expert, Keira help
me to achieve, love, and appreciate my curls.
It was challenging at first. Mainly because I
was playing the comparison game. I wanted
my curls to look like some others that I’ve
seen along the way but I soon realized that
comparison is the thief of joy. My hair is MY
hair and I had to find the joy in it. I now wear
my curls with pride and I can honestly say I
wish I started sooner! Welcome to the
natural hair issue.
