could it hurt to just have a website? The items
will be there if people shop online OK but if not,
it’s fine because I’m still gonna have my mobile
business rolling. So I planned to launch my
website on my birthday which was the end of
February 2020 and we know what happened
around that time. Within weeks of launching the
world shut down and the girlies were scrambling
to get their haircare needs and everything took
off from there.
What sets The Beauty Nomad apart from other
beauty supplies?
I would say it’s not only my knowledge and 20
years of experience but my God-given creativity
and passion to help others. A lot of people just
start businesses with no knowledge or
experience in that field, especially when it comes
to hair and haircare. They just see the dollar signs
and for me working in the haircare industry has
always been a passion, a dream, a love for hair
and people.
I’ve always been a people person I love helping
and educating people, especially people who
look like me and come from the same
background as me. Life has taught me that there
are not many businesses and opportunities that
are focused on helping us and our community.
And when it comes to beauty supplies, we know
firsthand that most of them are not owned by us
nor do they give back to or attempt to help our
communities though they benefit off of us and
our communities.
So many things in life seem so hard because
there’s so much unknown, but you learn as you
go, and while doing it you learn how to do it. It
sounds cliché but it’s the realist thing I could tell
anyone. There’s no magic recipe there’s no secret
formula. It is hard work, dedication, and being
resourceful that has gotten me to where I am
today.
As a black beauty supply owner, do you run
into any wholesale issues? I've heard a lot of
stories and would love to hear your experience
as a buyer.
Baby, let me tell you a lot of what we sell or don’t
sell is directly related to complications, hurdles,
obstacles, and if I’m being honest downright
discrimination in this industry. I think a lot of
people are scared to talk about it. I think a lot of
people are not as honest and upfront about it,
but it is one of the hardest parts of trying to do
what I do. It can be discouraging if you let it but
instead of letting them get to me, I focus on the
things I can control and the amazing brand and
wholesalers that I do get the chance to work
with. I also like to focus on the fact that one thing
they can never take away from me is my passion,
my creativity, and my drive so I’m always gonna
be able to make something shake!
Any advice for anyone considering selling
beauty supplies in the online space?
One piece of advice I would give someone
looking to sell beauty supplies online is to first be
real with yourself about why you’re doing it
because you’re going to face some obstacles.
Second, it would be to just do it!!
