DTH Magazine Q4... - Flipbook - Page 15
So fun fact for the readers, I was introduced to you
many many years ago in the fashion world and one
thing I loved that really stood out to me was your
beautiful gray hair. So I would love to know a little
more about you and your journey showing up as a
woman in the world with gray hair.
It’s funny because when I was going through it, it didn’t
feel like it was just me. But, I think now that we are ten
to fifteen years into the Internet, I now know that I was
one of the few people openly talking about gray hair,
having gray hair, and accepting it. But now that we are
into 2023, there are lots of girlies who are embracing
their gray hair and transitioning and I love to see that.
And I would also like to think that I contributed to some
of that confidence.
Early on I never really thought about covering up my
gray hair. My mom had gray hair. My dad has gray hair.
My aunties and uncles had gray hair. So I just thought
that ya’ll were all going to get gray hair like me. I didn’t
think it was such an anomaly. I didn’t think that I was
such a unicorn in the field, you know? And so it never
manifested into me not loving my hair. I always wanted
to look like my mom. I do look like my mom. So I never
really had some of the other stories, unfortunately, or
fortunately for me, like some of the other gray girlies.
I also will acknowledge that there is such a thing as gray
privilege. My hair is perfectly mixed a perfect shade of
gray. So I also don’t shame or fault women whose gray
doesn’t come in like what society thinks is perfect. So I
definitely believe everybody’s gray journey isn’t going to
be the same.
Tell us a little more about when your hair first
started to gray? What was that age and timeframe
like for you and your transition?
I think it was just a combination of it all. If I'm honest, I
get tired of talking about my gray hair but I try to remind
myself that I have been existing in this market and this
industry for over a decade so there are new eyes and
new ears on me. So of course I have to tell the same
stories over and over again. But also honoring the fact
that I don’t always want to talk about the fact that I have
gray hair. I love to do other things. I love to DJ, I love
music, I love to put on clothes and do my makeup. And
at a certain point, we really got to the place where the
education for gray hair was in an abundance so there
really wasn’t a need for me to talk about my gray hair in
that aspect.
I also wanted to make space for other girls. I know there
are a bunch of beauty girls and fashion girls who are just
starting and I don’t always feel like I have to say
