WILDLIFE SAFETY
KNOW YOUR SPACING
Stay at least 100 meters away from bears
Stay at least 20 meters away from moose
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN PRACTICALLY?
When walking around you’re likely to encounter
wildlife of some kind.
If it’s a bear:
Look big and slowly back away
Be loud and if in a group, stay together to make
yourself look bigger.
Do not run!
If it’s a moose:
Give the animal a chance to pass by or have a
safe exit. Many times, they are just moving
through.
If by chance the moose does close the distance,
move away quickly. It is okay to run from a
moose.
Other wildlife:
Feeding animals is one of the biggest concerns.
Squirrels, wild hare, ravens, coyotes, fox and
many other animals will become habituated to
humans, and often end up being killed as a
result.
Cleaning up trash and not feeding
animals in Alaska keeps them safe.
