BACKCOUNTRY SAFETY
Have an emergency plan: Before you head out,
leave a detailed trip itinerary with a friend or
employer, including return time. Include
contact information for who they should call if
you’re not home by the appointed time. Carry a
personal locator beacon, at least one brightlycolored layer, and a small mirror for signaling
if you do get lost or stranded.
If you’re not experienced, stay on the trail:
It’s amazing how fast you can get disoriented
in forest and ridges —even after straying just a
few steps.
Food safety: If you’ll be overnighting in
nature, then plan for safe food storage. Keep
food in bear proof containers and do not store
it in your campsite.
