WILLIAM GREENLEAF ELIOT SEED FUND
In November 2016, we launched the William Greenleaf Eliot Seed Fund, a venture capital seed fund aimed at
helping to propel early-stage business ventures by students, faculty and recent alumni.
SBIR/STTR GRANTS
The federal government funds research and development by small businesses through
the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer Innovation Research
(STTR) funding mechanisms. While these grants are made to small business concerns, they often support the
translational science research necessary to commercialize academic discoveries, and significant sub-contracts
can be granted to associated universities.
From June 2016 to June 2017, the Skandalaris Center provided administrative, grant writing, and business
development support to six University-associated businesses with the intent of submitting SBIR/STTR grants.
Four of these companies were led by faculty and staff, and two were led by students. Three grants were
eventually submitted for funding; companies whose grants were not submitted still received substantial
services (e.g. business plan writing). Of submitted grants, one is currently pending review and another was
awarded a $1.5M, 2-year grant with a substantial sub-contract to Washington University.
