WHAT IS GEOFENCING MARKETING?
For many experts, geo-marketing (based on geo-spotting) and,
more specifically, the geo-fencing system is one of the areas of
marketing expected to grow the most over the next few years.
There are three ways to identify the location of potential
customers: GPS, radio waves, beacons.
1
GPS: The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite
network orbiting the Earth that can triangulate an
individual’s position with precision.
2
Radio Waves: Bluetooth technology contains small
computer chips that use radio waves to connect.
3
Beacons: Beacon technology works with smartphone
location services and alert applications when you are
approaching or leaving a location. It uses a BlueTooth
signal to tell you when you are near a beacon, such as a
cash register in a retail store.
Thanks to the different geo-location techniques, we are now able
to do geo-fencing. Geo-fencing can draw virtual barriers on a
digital map to delimit each of the places to be targeted. The goal
is to capture the mobile devices of consumers who go there.
The geo-fences thus delimited make it possible to know as
soon as a prospect enters the targeted area. You can then push
your message at the right time, in the right place, to the right
person via their cell phone. This can be done by text messages,
on visited websites, on a mobile application, etc.
At Empower, we call this our Foot Traffic Service (FTS).
