WE WERE

BROKE

FOR EACH OTHER
Jermaine Barnes (T’05) and
Shawnta Shicole (Stockton) Barnes (LA’06)
We connected on Black Planet, an online dating site for the Black
community. After chatting back and forth for a while, we met in the lobby
of Windsor Halls. After our first meeting, we ate lunch together at my
dorm or his. Eventually, we realized that we were in the same agricultural
economics class. The professor had alphabetized us. Jermaine was in the
front row, and I was in the back. We were both from Indianapolis, and he
offered to drive me home during one of the breaks. That’s when I found
out his mother lived in my neighborhood—within walking distance of
my parent’s house. We discovered we attended the same elementary,
middle, and high schools. Jermaine was a grade ahead of me in school,
but we never met until Purdue. —SHAWNTA SHICOLE BARNES

We lived across the hall from each
other at the Brownstone Apartments
in front of Windsor Halls. In December
1982, Keith and his roommate were
making a lot of noise in the stairwell
completing a final class project while
I was trying to study. I opened my
apartment door and loudly asked
them to keep it down. They replied,
“Huh, there’s someone living there,”
and continued to make a racket.
Fast forward to spring semester
1983 and our first date at the
Ground Round. We were both
broke—he had a beer, I had
a water, and we shared baskets
of peanuts and fried veggies.
The total cost including tip was $5.
