The Role of the Governing Board
in Your School
What does the Governing
Body do in a School?
The Governing Board of a school or
academy has responsibility for its
strategic direction and development.
Governors work in partnership with the
executive leadership of the school, who
are responsible for operational
leadership and management. Strong
governance is a key part of any
successful school.
All Governing Boards, no matter what
type of school or the number of schools
they govern, have three core functions:
1. To ensure clarity of ethos, vision
and strategic direction of the school
2. To hold the executive leaders of the
school to account for the educational
performance of the organisation and its
pupils, and the performance
management of staff
3. To oversee the financial performance
of the organisation and make sure its
money is well spent.
The role of a governor is largely a
thinking, questioning and challenging
role, rather than a doing role.
