‘U’ Chant (track 37)
• Chant with the class: The letter is ‘U’. The sound is /u/. The word is ‘up’.
Drawing the Letter ‘U’
• Draw the small letter ‘u’ on the board. Ask what shapes it has. (a hook and straight
lines)
• Chant: The letter is ‘u’. The sound is / ŭ /. The word is ‘up’.
• Ask what letter the small ‘u’ looks like. (an upside down, small 'n')
• Hold up the card with the letter ‘u’ and ask what the letter and sound is. ('u', /u/)
• Turn the card upside down. Ask what letter and sound it is now. (small ‘n’)
Name Cards Activity
There are very few names in English that begin with the letter ‘U’. Those that do, do not
begin with the short letter / ŭ / sound.
Big ‘U’
• Draw a big ‘U’ on the board.
• Ask: What shapes does it have? (a big hook and two straight lines)
• Ask what letter it looks like. (small 'u')
Letter Cards
Open the Workbook to pages 43 and 45.
• Have students carefully remove the ‘U’ and ‘u’ Letter Cards.
• Chant: The letter is ‘u’. The sound is / ŭ /. The word is ‘up’.
• Now Tell students to take out the ‘Nn’ and the ‘Oo’ Letter Cards and put them on their
tables with the big and small letters in pairs, i.e. ‘Uu’, ‘Nn’ and ‘Oo’.
• Say: Point to the letter ‘N’ and chant together. The letter is ‘N’. The sound is /n/. The
word is ‘no’. Have students do the appropriate action.
• Call out: Big ‘U’. Students must raise the correct card.
• Call out: Small ‘u’. Students must raise the correct card.
• Continue for the ‘Nn’ and ‘Oo’ Letter Cards.
ABC Poster, Mural and Song
• Have a student point to the letters ‘Uu’ on the poster.
• Chant and do the appropriate action: The letter is ‘U’. The sound is / ŭ /. The word is
‘up’.
• Tell students to hold up the mural piece for ‘Uu’.
• Ask students where they think the letters ‘Uu’ go. (after ‘Tt’, between ‘Tt’ and ‘Vv’,
before ‘Vv’)
• Hang up the mural piece.
• Sing the ABC Song (track 7). Do the actions for the letters they have learned.
