Reading Readiness TG - Book - Page 22
Note: Students who have heard the song before may want to sing along. Make sure
that students hear and learn the names of the letters correctly. Therefore, have them
sing along without vocalizing. After the song is taught, sound by sound, students may
sing aloud.
The Letter ‘L’
• Draw a straight line on the board in the shape of a small letter ‘l’.
• Ask: What shape is it? (a line) Have everyone repeat the word ‘line’.
• Say: This is a line. It is also the first letter we are learning. The letter is called ‘L’.
• Ask: What sound do you hear at the beginning of the word ‘line’? (/l/)
• Say: The letter is ‘L’. The sound is /l/. Repeat with the class.
• Ask: What letter makes the sound /l/ in your language?
Game: Look and Listen
• Shade your eyes with one hand, look at the ‘L’ and say: Look! Look! The letter is ‘L’.
• Have students do this with you.
• Cup one hand around one ear, and say: Listen! Listen! The sound is /l/.
• Have students do it with you.
• Repeat both ‘Look’ and ‘Listen’ actions with the class.

Activity 1
• Ask students to take out their plasticine and/or pipe cleaners.
• Show students how to roll a small log (line) with the plasticine. Put the log on the
lower-case letter ‘l’ at the top of the page.
• Tell them that there are two kinds of letter ‘L’. Say: small and big. In English, we use
the big letters for names.
• Now have students roll another piece of plasticine and cover the capital letter ‘L’ at the
top of the page.
• After students have removed their plasticine and put them into their bags, have them
color in the large ‘L’ and ‘l’ shapes.
Activity 2
• Point to the Letter House poster.
• Explain that all of the letters live in the house. Some are so tall, that they go from the
top floor the main floor, some stay on the main floor, and some go to the basement.
• Draw a small ‘l’ in the house. Be sure to begin from the top and draw downwards.
Have students draw the letter in the air.
• After students sing the Pencil Song (track 3), have them draw a row of small ‘l’s
on page 12. As they draw each ‘l’, students can say the sound /l/.
