Lesson Procedure
Body Shapes and Action
• Hold up your hands with your palms open, facing you.
• Cross your open hands and interlock your thumbs, to make the shape of a bird whose
wings are open.

Say: This is a bird. Flap your hands by bending your fingers. Teach them the word
‘wings’.
Ask: What sound do you hear at the beginning of the word ‘wings’? (/w/)
Flap your wings by bending your fingers. Say: /w/ /w/ wings. Have students repeat
after you.
Draw a ‘W’ on the board and chant: The letter is W. The sound is /w/. The word is
‘wings’.
Do the appropriate wing actions.
Ask students what shapes make a ‘W’. (4 lines)
Ask what letter ‘W’ looks like. (two V’s put together)
Take one of the letters ‘V’ that you have prepared. Put it up on the board and ask:
What letter is this? Chant: The letter is ‘V’. The sound is /v/. The word is ‘violin’. Do
the appropriate action.
Put the other letter ‘V’ shape beside the first one on the board to make a ‘W’.
Ask: What letter is this? (W)
‘W’ Chant (track 11)
• Play track 11 and chant with the class: The letter is W. The sound is /w/. The word is
‘wings’.
Name Cards Activity
• If there are any students in the class whose names begin with ‘W’, follow the instructions
for the Name Cards Activity in lesson 8, page 21.
• Explain that in some languages there is no sound /w/.
