Before the Lesson
Prepare Name Cards for students whose names begin with ‘Y’.
Lesson Procedure
Body Shapes and Action
• Draw a small ‘y’ on the board.
Note: The letter ‘Y’ makes three different sounds, like in ‘yellow’, ‘baby’ and ‘sky’. Yet,
in this program we will focus only on the basic sound of ‘y’ like in ‘yellow’. Point to the
letter and nod your head as you say: Yes! The letter is ‘Y’.
• Have students repeat after you and do the action.
‘Y’Chant (track 14)
The letter is ‘Y’. The sound is /y/. The word is ‘yes’.
The word is ‘yellow’.
The word is ‘yo-yo’.

Repeat the chant with students.
Ask what shapes make a small ‘y’. (2 lines)
Ask students what letter it looks like. (v) Ask: How is it different? (the line going down
is longer)
Draw a big ‘Y’ on the board and ask: What shapes make a big ‘Y’? (3 lines / a ‘v’ and
a line)
Give students a few minutes to make the letter ‘Y’ with their bodies. They may use
