fingers, legs, arms, etc.
Invite several students to come to the front to show the class how they did it (e.g.
stand straight with arms spread up and out or make a ‘v’ with fingers and the arm is
the down stroke).
Name Cards Activity
If there are any students in the class whose names begin with the letter ‘Y’, follow the
instructions for the Name Cards Activity in Lesson 8, on page 21.
Letter Cards
• Open the Workbook to pages 43 and 45.
• Have students carefully remove the ‘Y’ and ‘y’ Letter Cards.
• Ask: What is the difference between the big ‘Y’ and small ‘y’? (They both have a ‘v’
but the ‘leg’ is different. ‘Y’ has three lines, and ‘y’ has two lines. ‘Y’ is tall, and ‘y’ goes
down.)
• Have students draw the letters with their fingers in the air.
• Have students take out their Letter Cards. Tell them to find the big and small ‘Yy’s and
‘Vv’s and match them.
• Ask students to hold up different Letter Cards (e.g. big ‘V’, small ‘v’, big ‘Y’, small ‘Y’,)
and say what sound they make.
Game; Letter Cards and Chants
• Divide the class into two teams. Give each team a name that begins with the sound
/y/, e.g. yogurt, yellow, yo-yo.
• Put all of the Letter Cards they have studied into a bag. Take out a letter card and
show it to students.
• Each player in turn must do the correct action and chant: The letter is __. The sound
is / /. The word is________.
• Each correct answer is worth one point.
