Open the Workbook to page 20.
Have students fill in the missing letters on the page.
If a big letter is shown, they write the small letter. If a small letter is shown, they write
the big one.
Note: This page may be used for assessing students’ ability to write the big and small
letters that have been taught. You may use the results of this page to complete the
student achievement chart on page 45 in this book.
Game: Name the Letter
• Divide the class into pairs and give each pair a die and each student a ‘man’.
• Have the pairs put their ‘men’ on the starting point (the pirate ship).
• Each player in turn throws the die and moves his ‘man’ along the path according to the
number shown on the die.
• When a player lands on a square, the player must say both the name of the letter and
the sound it makes. If they are correct, they stay on the square. If not, they go back to
where they were before.
• The first player to reach the treasure wins.
Assessment Activities
The following activities may be used to assess students’ abilities:
• To say the letter names and the sound each letter makes and the word which begins
with the letter (except the word ‘taxi’ for ‘x’).
• To write the big and small letters.
Each student’s progress may be marked on a copy of the Assessment Chart provided on
page 46.
