Lesson Procedure
Action and Body Shapes
• Draw an ‘O’ on the board.
• Say: The letter is ‘O’. The sound is /ŏ/. Have students repeat after you.
• Make a fist with one hand. With an open palm, place your other hand on the fist.
• Say: /ŏ/ on
• Take the open palm hand off the fist. Say: /ŏ/ off
• Have students do the actions with you and say: /ŏ/ on, /ŏ/ off
• Ask students what shape makes an ‘O’. (a circle)
• Give students a few minutes to make the letter ‘O’ with their bodies. They may use
fingers, hands, arms, etc.
• Invite several students to the front to show the class how they do it.
Game: Team Shapes
• Divide the class into four teams.
• Write Team 1, 2, 3, 4 on the board to keep score.
• When you say the name of a letter, each team must arrange itself to make the letter.
E.g. for the letter ‘O’, the team makes a circle. For ‘l’ they make a line.
• Call any of the letters students have learned so far: ‘Ll’, ‘Ii’, ‘Vv’, ‘Ww’, ‘Xx’, ‘Yy’, ‘Zz’,
‘Kk’, ‘Oo’. As soon as a team makes the letter, all of the students on that team sit
down, and chant: The letter is ___. The sound is /_ /. The word is______.
• The first team to finish earns a point.
