Lesson Procedure
Small 'q', Action and Chant
• Ask one student to bang on the table saying: boom, boom, boom!
• Cover your ears with your hands and say: Quiet, Quiet
• Ask students what sound they hear at the beginning of the word ‘quiet’? (/kw/)
• Ask: What letters do we know that say /k/? (k and c)
• Tell them that at the beginning of the word ‘quiet’ we hear /k/ but it is really /kw/
• Whisper: /kw/ /kw/ quiet, and put your finger on your lips to make the action ‘quiet’.
• Have the class whisper: /kw/ /kw/ quiet.
• Tell them to cover their ears while saying /kw/.
• Draw a small ‘q’ on the board and say: The letter is ‘Q’. The sound is /kw/. The word
is ‘quiet’.
• Ask: What shapes make a small ‘q’? (a part-circle and a line)
• Ask: What letter does it looks like? (d) Ask: How is it different? (the line goes down
instead of up)
• Draw a big ‘Q’ on the board. Ask: What shapes make a big ‘Q’? (a circle and a small
line)
• Ask: What letter does it looks like? (O) Then ask: How is it different? (‘Q’ has a small
line on the side)
• Chant (track 21): The letter is ‘Q’. The sound is /kw/. The word is ‘quiet’.
• Have students chant with you and do the appropriate actions. (put their finger on their
lips for ‘quiet’)
Note: Although the sound /kw/ requires the letters ‘q’ and ‘u’, we do not introduce the
letter ‘u’ at this time. Students need only to know that the ‘q’ says /kw/.
