The sitting position
Students should always write at a table or a desk. While most students do so at school,
many students lie on the floor, or hold a book on their lap when they are at home. They
should be encouraged to sit at a desk both at school and at home.
The ‘sitting position’ is very important for producing neat, clear writing. An uncomfortable
or incorrect sitting position makes the writer more tired and the writing may become
messy.
Correct Sitting Position
Incorrect Sitting Position
To ensure a correct sitting position the following steps should be taken:
1. Students should rest both feet on the floor when sitting at their desks.
2. The writing table should be at the height of students' elbows.
3. Students should sit with their backs straight when writing. They should not bend over
the table.
Note:
• If a student holds his head too close to the paper, it may indicate a vision
problem which should be checked.
• A left-handed student should be seated on the left side of a two-student
desk, or beside another left-handed student. This will prevent students’ arms
from bumping into one another.
