Before the Lesson
Prepare Name Cards for students whose names begin with ‘G’.
Lesson Procedure
Small 't', Action and Chant
• Hold up the picture of the gorilla. Ask: What is it?
• Ask students what sound they hear at the beginning of the word ‘gorilla’. (/g/)
• Ask students to act like a gorilla by scratching their sides and say: /g/ /g/ gorilla
• Draw a ‘g’ on the board. Chant (track 29): The letter is ‘G’. The sound is /g/. The word
is ‘gorilla’.
• Have students repeat after you.
• Ask what shapes make a ‘g’. (a part circle and a line with a curve at the bottom)
• Now ask what letter small ‘g’ looks like. (small ‘q’) Ask: How are they different? (small
‘q’ has a straight line and small ‘g’ has a curve at the bottom)
Game: Name the Letter
• Divide the class into two teams.
• Each team chooses a team name that begins with the sound /g/ e.g. The Gorillas, The
Guitars.
• Write the names on the board in the form of a scoreboard.
• Player #1 on the first team (e.g. Gorillas) does the action for one of the letters the class
has learned.
• Player #1 on the second team (e.g. Guitars) must say the name of the letter and the
sound it makes. If both the name and sound are correct, the ‘Guitar’ player goes up
and writes the letter on the Guitar’s scoreboard. If they are not correct, there is no
score.
