5. Name Cards Activity; Recognizing Names as Sight Words
•
•
It is recommended that teachers hang a poster on the wall with the children’s
names and pictures.
The Name Cards Activity will introduce every letter and students will learn to
recognize their names as they are written in English (see Lesson 8, page 17).
How to Teach Songs and Chants
See Songs Appendix page 109 for words of songs, chants and track numbers.
• Tell students that they are going to hear songs and chants on the CD. Ask them
to only listen and not to sing along the first time, even if they know the song. If
students try to echo the song they will not be able to listen to the correct words
and melody.
• Play the song/chant. Demonstrate the actions to the song/chant.
• Sing/chant the first line of the song/chant. Have students repeat. If there are
actions, include them.
• Sing/chant the second line. Have students repeat and continue teaching the
song line by line.
• Play the CD again and have everyone sing along with you. The chants will be
played twice.
• Now play the song/chant, this time only students should sing along. You may
choose a student to lead the song.
• Have the class sing/chant again without the CD and without your help. Unless
students can sing without assistance, they do not really know the song/chant. It
may take several lessons for students to reach this level of independence.
How to Teach Letters
Letters are formed from geometrical shapes. In this program, the process of teaching
young learners how to identify letters and write them is done in two stages:
•
•
Stage 1: Lessons 1-7 Introduction to Shapes
Familiarize students with shapes that are relevant to the forms of the English
letters by identifying the shapes, tracing and drawing them.
•
•
Stage 2: Lessons 8-36 Introduction to Letters
Use the shapes to form the letters.
The letters are taught in groups according to the shapes of the small letters. The big
(capital) letters will be taught at the same time.
• Straight Line Letters: Ll Ii Vv Ww Xx Yy Zz Kk
• Circle: Oo
• Part Circle Letters: Cc Aa Dd Qq Pp Bb Ee
• Hook: Ff Tt Gg Jj Hh Nn Mm Rr Uu
• S: Ss
