4. SEALING THE DEAL
WHAT PAPERWORK YOU’LL NEED
If you’ve made it this far, then congratulations! You’re almost ready for your inaugural
drive in your new vehicle.
Once you’re ready to sign all of the paperwork standing between you and your new
ride, you’re going to need some of your own paperwork on hand as well. Here’s a
quick checklist of what you’ll need:
•
Your driver’s license
•
Your current vehicle’s title (if you plan to trade-in)
•
A recent pay stub (if you plan to finance)
•
Your insurance agent’s contact information (to get a quote for your new vehicle)
•
Your checkbook
If you do plan to trade in a vehicle, make sure to thoroughly clean your old car out
of any personal belongings. While cleaning your car is just good etiquette, you don’t
want to leave behind any embarrassing notes or important documents you’ve long
forgotten about.
You can also consider bringing your older vehicle’s maintenance records to help the
dealership appraise your vehicle. This may not be a necessary step, but it will show
that you’ve gone the extra mile to make your car as presentable as possible.
MAKING SURE YOUR NEW VEHICLE IS COVERED BY INSURANCE
Since you’re spending money on a vehicle, you’ll want to make sure that you’re
covered by insurance. And depending on whether or not you finance the vehicle, and
your state’s laws, you may not have an option and will be required to get covered.
In most cases, your current insurance should cover you for when you’re driving the
vehicle off the lot, but it’s always better to play it safe and either call your insurance
agent or log into your insurance account online and add your new vehicle to your
policy.
