5. AFTER YOU BRING IT HOME
VEHICLE MAINTENANCE
You’ve done the legwork, you’ve done the paperwork, and now your car is finally
yours to drive to your heart’s content. Congratulations!
Your car is in perfect shape now, and if you know the fundamental rules of vehicle
maintenance, you can keep it that way for years to come. Here are some important
vehicle maintenance tips to keep in mind.
•
Read your owner’s manual: Don’t treat your manual like agreeing to the terms of
service of your phone’s latest update. The owner’s manual not only tells you how
to use all the cool features of your new car, it also can provide vital information
about your car’s maintenance. For example, you may find out exactly when you
should change your oil, or what kind of oil you need to use. Speaking of which…
•
Check your car’s fluids: Checking your car’s oil and antifreeze isn’t as daunting as
it might sound. A healthy oil compartment is one of the best ways to extend your
car’s life.
•
Listen to your maintenance light: When your vehicle tells you “maintenance
required,” you should take it seriously. The light may be coming on for a relatively
benign reason, but even small issues left unchecked can lead to big problems in
the future. Schedule an appointment to get it checked out ASAP.
•
If something seems wrong, get it checked out: If your vehicle starts making
weird noises or performs a bit funny, don’t just assume the problem will solve
itself. Even if the solution is as simple as putting some air in your tires, you’ll
want to get to the bottom of the root cause. It can be inconvenient to get your
car checked out on top of your already busy schedule, but when it comes to your
vehicle’s performance, the safety of you and your passengers could be on the line.
A little due diligence goes a long way to keeping you safe.
