THE COMPLETE CAR BUYER’S GUIDE
•
Crossover: If the last 4 body styles were too big or too small, think of a crossover
like a combination of all of the above. As the name implies, a crossover has many
of the benefits of a compact car with some of the utility of the larger vehicles. If
you need just a little bit of everything the market has to offer, a crossover might
be a perfect fit.
There are many other body styles you can choose from, but they become
progressively more niche. Maybe you want a microcar to transport just you and
you alone, or maybe you want the powerful feel of a sports car. Depending on your
needs, your salesperson can work with you to find the style of car that’s right for you.
NEW VS. USED
There is frequent debate over whether it’s better to buy vehicles new rather than
used. The truth is, there is no one-size-fits-all answer.
The most common argument in favor of used cars is the money you’ll save in the
long run. As you may have heard before, new vehicles depreciate in value after you
purchase them. That being said, some makes and models hold their value better than
others, and there is no truly accurate “standard” depreciation figure available.
Since modern cars last longer than they ever have before, you can easily get years of
use out of a used car before you need to replace it. Even if you won’t keep a used car
for quite as long as a new car, you can put the money you’ve saved towards your next
vehicle when the time comes.
This isn’t to say there’s no reason to buy new. Dealerships often have promotions to
help sell their newest inventory, which can include 0% APR financing or cash rebates
worth thousands of dollars. In other words, while depreciation can be a factor, you
might make up that “lost” money if you buy new at the right time. You may need to
stay in touch with your salesperson for a while to find the right time to strike, but the
payoff can be well worth it in the end.
Buying a new car also means enjoying the benefits of the latest technology. This
can be small features that make your ride more comfortable, or core features that
improve safety or gas mileage. Not to mention that you’ll be able to enjoy the early
years of a vehicle’s life when little to no maintenance is required.
