Classroom Observation
Observation
Lewis & Clark Montessori students and guides will use the first six
weeks of school to create the Montessori environment. After that, interested persons are encouraged to call the office for an appointment
to observe. Please refer to the following Observation Guidelines for
further details.
Given time without distraction or disruption, Montessori classrooms
develop into normalized environments where children are absorbed
in their work and confident of their ability to engage in either small
groups or alone.
If observers visit classrooms before children have learned to attend to
their work, they will likely respond to the stimulation of observers and
the very atmosphere that the observer has come to see will not exist.
We believe that this attention to the needs of the children to work
undisturbed will give observers a more accurate picture of the nature
of a Montessori classroom; which is, after all, the reason for observing.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO OBSERVE:
• Schedule a time with the office. Observations generally last 30
minutes, but longer visits may be made with special arrangements.
• Please try to arrive at school at least five minutes prior to your
appointment.
• Enjoy your observation, and thank you for the respect you give to
the children as they go about their very important work.
