APPENDIX B
THE SECOND PLANE: AGES 6 – 12
At around age 6, not only are physical changes manifest in the child,
but new capacities are seen in their cognitive development. This second plane of development is called The Age of Reason and Imagination, and is considered the time in which they are most capable of
intellectual development.
Along with key lessons in all academic areas, the Montessori approach
embodies concern and respect for the whole child. A finely-tuned
sense of responsibility, self-control, social sensitivity and concern for
the human community is considered equally important, as this age
group has an increasing interest in their moral development.
The Adolescent Program
NB: The Lewis & Clark Montessori Adolescent Corps of Discovery
(MAC) has its own Handbook in which the program is described in
detail. Adolescents and their families receive this in its entirety at the
beginning of school.
THE THIRD PLANE: AGES 12 – 18
In this third plane of development, the first plane’s work of the hand
combines with the second plane’s work of the mind to blossom into
the third plane’s work in the world. This plane of development is called
The Age of Self-Construction.
The Montessori Adolescent Program is designed to respond to the
sensitivities of this age: personal dignity, social justice, and belonging.
Students continue to be agents of their own learning while working
independently and collaboratively with a wider range of adults and
peers than in the past.
In this time they get to observe and practice adult behavior and develop real strategies for thriving in the adult world. These experiments
with self-expression lead to self-construction, which in turn leads to
self-awareness. Through this awareness they create a more solid idea of
who they are and how they can contribute to society.
