“We are grateful for
a new significance, and been put to the test this year across organizations as leaders have
grappled with unprecedented turmoil.
In an era of COVID-19, it’s about how you cope with the sudden shutdown of much of the
global economy, how you deploy data to inform decisions, how you consider every human
element and lead with empathy, and how you plan for the future, even when the present is
uncertain. In an era of social unrest, it’s about thoughtful self-reflection, critical examination
of how you can effect change, data-informed research, and listening to all voices.
This year, leaders faced two pandemics—a public health crisis of a scale not seen in
generations, and a social crisis centered on the persistent problem of racial injustice and
systemic bias.
At Maryland Smith, we’re helping shape business leaders who can guide teams through
any crisis, using data coupled with empathy and compassion as essential navigational
tools. Here in College Park, meanwhile, we are guiding our own teams through the same
extraordinary events.
In March, as Maryland and much of the country went into lockdown to prevent the spread
of the new coronavirus, we pivoted, in dramatic fashion, sending our staff operations home,
and shifting to online instruction for all courses. We converted more than 500 courses to
online, in just a couple of weeks.
The academic year would go on—online. And so would our job fairs, our awards banquets,
our talent shows, our annual Pitch Dingman competition, our commencement ceremony.
We leaned in and leveraged technology to keep our students, faculty and wider
community engaged, and to keep our goals in focus.
We launched Maryland Smith Business: Rebooted, a free, live webinar series that is
helping Maryland residents navigate the unfathomable impacts of COVID-19 on their smalland medium-sized businesses, with help from Smith's expert faculty.
In May, when the police killing of George Floyd sparked national and international anguish
and outrage, we came together as a community.
At Maryland Smith, we amplified and accelerated our robust slate of diversity, equity and
inclusion initiatives. We hosted forums and chats, and created a new speakers bureau and an
anti-racist book club. We know the scale and scope of the challenge, and we know we would
be remiss if we were not training the next generation of business leaders to face it head on.
At the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, we are grateful for
our role in equipping business leaders with the skills to make the best decisions, even when
circumstances are far from best.
