Superstorm Sandy October 2012
Superstorm Sandy devastated our region. Many of Evergreen’s staff and students were affected. The school
closed for a week and then reopened. During the closure, Evergreen provided shelter to several individuals
who had lost their homes and possessions.
Thanksgiving 2012
In 2012, José Calderón, the Executive Director of the Hispanic Federation, Círculo de la Hispanidad and
other community organizations and individuals came together to create a Thanksgiving meal for individuals
in Long Beach following Superstorm Sandy. The Hispanic Federation provided the food for the event and
Evergreen’s Chef Josh cooked a Thanksgiving meal for over three hundred individuals using Círculo Center’s
commercial kitchen. The Hispanic Federation transported the food to Long Beach where other community
organizations, professionals and volunteers distributed the food.

Construction on the Second Floor Continues
During 2013, the agency was able to finish construction on the East Wing of the second floor. The previous
year’s construction was completed on the South Wing but the East Wing remained unfinished. Sarah and Gil
worked diligently to secure additional funding. Two additional classrooms spaces were completed as well as
small offices, a meeting room and bathrooms. These additions provided space for the fifth grade.
