Ten Year Anniversary
Evergreen’s Tenth Anniversary was January 13, 2019. Both the elementary and middle school held birthday
celebrations on Monday, January 14. Formal celebrations were scheduled for February 1st and 2nd with the
school’s choir and orchestra.
The celebration held on Friday, February 1, 2019 included students, staff, members of the Board of Trustees,
as well as elected officials. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran; Assemblywoman Taylor Darling;
Nassau County Legislator Laura Schaefer; Charter School Office Director of the New York State Education
Department David Frank; and other guests were present. All had warm congratulatory remarks. Founders
Dr. Sarah Brewster and Mr. Gil Bernardino addressed all, thanking those who contributed to the success of
Evergreen’s past and present. They committed to continue working hard to have the best school possible and
to respond to the request of families to create a high school for their children.
On Saturday, February 2, 2019, we invited families to celebrate the history and accomplishments of Evergreen.
Our choir and orchestra were part of both celebrations. In addition, for both days, we had professional singers
as our guests: Rafael Lebrón and Ilya Martínez. The musical presentations were outstanding, and we were
very proud of our students and staff for their hard work and dedication. We culminated the celebration by
singing the Impossible Dream. It is a celebration that will remain forever in our hearts.
Basketball Teams
Evergreen began its first competitive middle school basketball teams for boys and girls during the 2018-2019
school year. We played different schools across Long Island and the New York City area. It was a great
learning experience for all including the coaches and students. We are very proud of the achievements of our
athletes and look forward to building our program in the coming years.
Public School Hearing for Expansion
On February 13, 2019, Evergreen attended the public hearing held at the ABGS Hempstead Middle School
for its proposed expansion. We had so many attendees from Evergreen that there was standing room only and
people had to wait outside because the space was filled to capacity. It was a moment of true solidarity seeing
our students and parents share why they love Evergreen and why they supported its expansion.
Land Acquisition - Winter 2019
Evergreen Charter School purchased two adjacent lots on Laurel Avenue in Hempstead to support the school’s
future continued growth. These lots are just a few blocks away from Evergreen’s elementary location.
Evergreen conducted site work to demolish dilapidated houses located on the site in preparation for future
construction.
Expansion Approval
On April 8, 2019, the Board of Regents of the New York State Department of Education approved Evergreen
Charter School’s proposal for expansion. This proposal included expanding enrollment to 125 students
commencing at the kindergarten level.
