GARDEN WRAP
Pungent rewards
Garlic
IT’S time to plant garlic cloves that will
be ready to harvest in about eight month’s
time.
Find a sunny spot in a well-drained
garden bed, or you can also grow garlic in
a 30cm diameter pot.
Mix some Yates Dynamic Lifter Soil
Improver and Plant Fertiliser into the
garden soil or potting mix.
This helps increase the amount of
organic matter in the soil which attracts
earthworms and soil microbes, helps
retain moisture and nutrients in the soil
and promotes better soil structure.
Yates Dynamic Lifter will also provide
the garlic with slow release organic
nutrients as it establishes.
It’s best to buy fresh garlic cloves from
a garden centre as garlic purchased in a
supermarket may have been sprayed with
a sprouting inhibitor and may not grow.
Plant the garlic cloves about 4 cm deep
with the pointy end facing up, leaving
about 10 cm between each clove.
After planting, water the garden bed or
pot well and apply a 5cm layer of mulch
like sugar cane or pea straw. This will help
keep the soil moist.
When the first garlic shoots emerge
through the mulch, keep the soil or potting
mix slightly moist and feed every six
weeks with Yates Thrive Natural Vegie
& Herb Organic Based Pelletised Plant
Food to promote healthy leaf growth as
well as good sized garlic bulbs.
Home grown
compost
IF you have deciduous trees at your place,
they can provide you with wheelbarrows
of fantastic fallen leaves during autumn.
Don’t leave them on the lawn as they
can shade the grass and create bare
patches. Rake them up and scatter them
over the top of garden beds as leaf mulch.
Another easy way to quickly tidy up
leaves on the lawn is to run the lawn
mower over them. They’ll be chopped
up finely in the catcher. These too can be

There are lots of
different composting
systems available, ranging
from enclosed compost tumblers to
do it yourself bays or frames in the back
corner of the yard.
Autumn leaves are high in organic
matter but low in the nutrients needed
for effective composting. This is where
Dynamic Lifter comes in.
It’s rich in organic nitrogen,
which helps to feed the composting
microorganisms as they start to break
down the autumn leaves into fabulous
compost that you can then mix into vegie
and flower beds in a few months time.
