TASMANIA’S 30 regional and rural agricultural shows will get funding grants to help show
societies host the events.
Community Development Minister Jeremy
Rockliff said the Agricultural Grants Fund
which was introduced in
2018 would be given a
$500,000 funding boost.
Mr Rockliff said the
money would be available for the next two

CRUCIATE
ligament
disease is one of the most
common causes of hind
limb lameness seen in
veterinary practice.
Both dogs and cats
have a cranial and caudal
cruciate ligament similar
to the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments
found in the human knee.
There are generally
two different populations
of animals which present
with cruciate disease.
Younger dogs and cats
often present with ruptured cruciates due to
trauma.
In dogs this is often
associated with running
followed by a sudden
change in direction (for
example chasing a ball).
In cats, cruciate dis-
years to help shows get
back on their feet after the
impacts of COVID-19.
This extends
support until 2024 to assist show societies with:
• improving the use of
technology to support
participation and new activities;
• improved business
management, planning
for shows and marketing;
and
• permanent infrastruc-
ture upgrades to improve
public safety, such as entrances and fencing.
“Our
agricultural
shows not only bring Tasmanians together, they
showcase our top-quality produce and livestock
and encourage investment in our regions.
“Many were hit hard
by COVID-19, and now
we’re supporting them
to come back bigger and
better,’’ Mr Rockliff said.

ease is not uncommon
following car accidents.
More mature dogs
commonly present with
cruciate disease as well.
In these animals, there is
a history of low grade repeated trauma and weakening of the ligaments.
The ligaments may
become stretched or partially torn and with time,
a complete cruciate tear
may result. The stifle
(knee) joints of these patients are often arthritic.
Overweight dogs and
those with other underlying stifle joint disorders
such as luxating patellas (knee caps) are also
prone to cruciate ligament disease.
It is not uncommon for
older, overweight dogs
to rupture both cruciates
within 12-18 months.
Your veterinarian will
likely reach a diagnosis
of cruciate ligament rupture based on their clinical exam findings.
Animals with ruptured
cruciates present with a
cranial drawer sign.
This describes the abnormal movement of the
tibia (shin bone) in relation to the femur (thigh
bone). Your vet may require heavy sedation or
a general anaesthetic to
fully evaluate this laxity.
Radiographs may be
required to evaluate concurrent arthritic changes
and to ensure no other disease process is occurring.
Surgery is often necessary for patients with

cruciate ligament disease.
In the event of a partial tear, the cruciate ligaments have a poor capacity to heal and further
tearing may result if left
untreated.
With a complete cruciate rupture, the knee joint
becomes unstable.
This results in abnormal movements with significant arthritic changes
occurring over time.
The type of surgery
that your veterinarian
recommends will vary on
a case by case basis.
