MARTINE HALEY
LOCALS wanting to travel
internationally can now fly direct to Auckland from Hobart
International Airport.
The Cambridge airport welcomed its first international flight since 1998 late last
month.
“It’s an honour to put the
international back in Hobart
International Airport,” said
Hobart Airport CEO Norris
Carter.
“In addition to ending a 23year misnomer, the return of
international passenger services to Tasmania will provide
a welcome boost to the economy as the state continues its
bounce back from COVID-19.
“While today’s touchdown
and disembarkation will be
over in a matter of minutes,
it marks the culmination of
years of hard work by the Hobart Airport team, State and
Federal Governments and Air
New Zealand.
“The end result is a huge
win for Tasmania, and a testament to the foresight and dedication to all involved in making it happen.
“Back when Hobart Airport
last welcomed an international flight in 1998, Tasmania
was viewed very differently
by many in Australia to how
it’s viewed now.
“Fast forward to 2021,
the state’s stunning scenery, unique experiences and
world-class food and beverages have made Tasmania the
envy of the nation, with visitors flocking back as domestic
travel heats up again.
“Opening our unique expe-

our visitor economy further,
truly taking the state to the
next level.”
The flights will fly on
Thursdays and Sundays.
Passengers from Air New
Zealand flight NZ0197 were
the first to use new $20 million arrival processing area.
Mr Carter said staff from
Hobart Airport and many other organisations had worked
around the clock to make sure
all the facilities and services
were in place for customs and
passenger processing.
“In a bonus for domestic
travellers, the new areas will
be able to be used for domestic flights when international
arrivals aren’t scheduled.
“This will result in more ca-
pacity for both domestic arrivals and departures, increasing
space and reducing wait times
as the airport continues to rebuild activity levels.
“We will work hard to make
sure our processes and systems are fine-tuned and up to
speed so that both domestic
and international visitors will
have the best possible experience when they arrive and
we’re hopeful it won’t take
long to bed down the new processes that we need to make
international flights a seamless part of airport activities.
“We know that our visitors
from New Zealand will have
the time of their lives and as
the gateway to Tasmania, we
want to ensure that outstanding experience starts the moment they arrive.”
Lena’s mission
SORELL City Mission Op Shop is
a hub of connection and community
for many of the volunteers who
dedicate their time and energy to the
store.
While many of them list giving
back to the community as a key
reason to get involved, the benefits to
their own wellbeing are just as great.
Lena Kelly has volunteered at City
Mission Op Shops since 2013 and
loves the social aspect.
“It really gets me out of the house
and engaged with the community,’’
Ms Kelly said.
“It makes me feel good to be giving
back to my local community but I also
do get a lot out of it socially.’’
Ms Kelly joined the Hobart City
Mission volunteer family after
experiencing a personal loss.
“I started volunteering 10 years
ago when I lost my husband.
“It had a huge impact on me and
volunteering really helped me to
get out of the house and get back to
normal life again,’’ she said.
“I love giving back to the
community, because volunteering
got me back to the old me.”
City Mission Op Shops are
currently seeking volunteers to join
the volunteer family at Sorell.
