Bypass a step closer
A TENDER to build the
Sorell Southern Bypass
is due to open in coming
days with construction to
start in September this
year and be completed
by March 2023.
The long-debated by-
pass, first raised in the
1970s, was approved by
Sorell Council last year.
Mayor Kerry Vincent
said those travelling in
the area would soon see
construction equipment.
“As the Sorell area

of State Growth’s South
East Traffic Solution
aims to help maintain the
liveability of Sorell and
the Southern Beaches by
improving traffic flow
through a more efficient
and safer road network,’’
according to the consultant’s report.
The project includes a
southern bypass of Sorell
between Tasman Highway near Giblin Drive
and the Arthur Highway
near Nugent Road. There
will be a roundabout at
the Giblin Drive end to
help traffic movement
to both Sorell and the
causeway and a roundabout at Tasman Highway near Nugent Road.
The bypass will be two
lanes with a speed limit
of 80 kmh.
It is expected that 40
per cent of traffic entering Sorell from the
causeways and 60 per
cent from the Arthur
Highway will take the
proposed bypass.
