Snap yourself up a treat Stronger
THE holiday break is here and, even though
this little island is surrounded by sea, for
many it’s one of the few times they get a
chance to regularly throw a line in.
This week there’s a bit of excitement as the
Snapper are running and Tim Russell popped
out to his King Island favourite beach and
snagged two pan-sized offerings.
“Thought I’d try my luck ... glad I did! I got
lucky on a rough and rainy night. A nice little
昀椀ght off the beach, it was a bit of a battle,” he
said. For the technically-minded, Tim used
squid on a 100-pound braid with a running
sinker and leader, with number 昀椀ve hooks.
As Tim’s favourite beach remains a
昀椀sherman’s secret, others report that big
Snapper are being caught, typically just before
sunrise, off the Currie wharf. It’s worth trying
at dusk if pre-dawn doesn’t appeal as Snapper
get busy in the last hour of light and into the
night. With a bit of luck you’ll also see the
‘green 昀氀ash’ as the sun disappears on the
horizon.
Snapper, just to confuse everyone, are also
called ‘pinkie’, ‘red and cockney bream’,
‘squire’ and other localised names. They can
be found in and around shallow and deep reefs
with rubbly grounds and within sheltered
bays. They are grazing 昀椀sh and feed while on
the move and will grab the bait and swim for
some distance before they stop and attempt
to swallow the bait. It’s recommended that
昀椀shers use the freshest possible bait, but as
scavengers and opportunistic 昀椀sh, they will
take anything. Some squid jigging at Grassy
Harbour and Naracoopa is usually productive.
Visitors may also wish to try Naracoopa
Jetty and do not need a licence for saltwater
or marine 昀椀shing with a rod and line around
King Island. The Snapper bag limit is 5, the
possession limit is 10 and no boat restrictions.
The minimum size, nose to tail, is 30cm.

THE Australian Human Rights
Commission (AHRC) implemented a pivotal change under
new enforcement powers last
week to workplace obligations,
for organisations and businesses across Australia that
fail to actively prevent workplace discrimination and sexual harassment.
Employers are held legally
responsible for failing to proactively take steps to prevent sexual harassment in the
workplace.
“Leaders of organisations
and businesses play a crucial
role in setting an example
in preventing unlawful conduct and fostering a culture
of respect and inclusiveness,”
Sex Discrimination Commissioner Dr Anna Cody said.
“This is an opportunity
for Australian workplaces
to become what they should
be – safe, inclusive, gender-equal, respectful and free
from sexual harassment and
sex discrimination.”
The Commission has new
regulatory powers to ensure
Australian workplaces, organisations and businesses meet the
‘positive duty’ requirements.
“Organisations and businesses are now required to
focus on actively preventing
unlawful conduct connected
to work, rather than responding only after it happens,” Dr
Cody said.
“The Australian Human
Rights Commission will have
the authority to ensure and
inquire into a duty holder’s
compliance with the positive
duty.” The purpose of the
positive duty is the creation
of safer, more inclusive, and
respectful workplaces throughout Australia. Dr Cody said
that sexual harassment in the
workplace was common, pervasive, and harmful and Australia had “much further to go”
in addressing it.

Commission’s website humanrights.gov.au
