Keep everyone
safe from 昀椀res
THE 2023-24 Fire Permit
Period for North-West Tasmania and King Island commenced on November 1.
The King Island Fire Service
recently attended a grass 昀椀re
and burn where the property
owner did not have a permit and
it resulted in a volunteer member being hospitalised overnight due to smoke inhalation.
During the Fire Permit
Period, 昀椀res are not banned,
however you need a 昀椀re permit
for the burning of vegetation at
all times during a declared Fire
Permit Period regardless of the
weather conditions. They are
allowed where there are good
opportunities to safely use 昀椀re
for land management purposes
unless there is a Total Fire Ban
in place.
Fire permits are required if
people wish to conduct burns to
reduce 昀椀re hazards larger than
one cubic metre in size on their
property on King Island.
Your permit will contain conditions to increase the safety of
the 昀椀re such as the speci昀椀ed
weather conditions allowed, the
requirement for certain equipment, and who you need to
notify before you light.
The Tasmanian Fire Service advises that everyone
be prepared for a high-risk
bush昀椀re season and to have a
Bush昀椀re Plan that can be implemented. Your plan includes an
emergency evacuation kit in
your car, knowing where to
go and how to get there safely,
knowing what to expect and
what you might experience,
and survival options.
This can help you make
important decisions before you
could be threatened by a bush昀椀re. Being prepared can make
it less stressful and may reduce
the impact. It could save your
life. Don’t wait until it’s too
late. Prepare now.
Go to bush昀椀re.tas.gov.au to
prepare a bush昀椀re plan, and
obtain the TFS Bush昀椀re Safety
Guide. The website also has
links to view daily and up-todate forecasts and daily 昀椀re
danger ratings. King Island
