Our responsibilty to birds
AN ENGAGED audience attended a public
talk by Dr Eric Woehler in mid-December at
Currie in which he described his scienti昀椀c
surveys of shorebirds and seabirds around
Tasmania, including King Island and the
Furneaux Group spanning 30 years.
Analysis of his mapping and census data
show that King Island’s beaches are of
international signi昀椀cance for the Threatened
Hooded Plover and the Australian Pied
Oystercatcher. With more than 1 per cent
of the global populations of both species,
King Island’s beaches are a critical breeding
habitat for them.
“These species rely on King Island’s
beaches every day of their lives to nest,
feed and survive,” Dr Woehler said. “Pied
Oystercatchers can live for more than 35
years, a remarkable life expectancy.”
The talk also described the current
breeding efforts of the Threatened Fairy
Tern - a tiny seabird a fraction of the size of
a Silver Gull - on several beaches around the
island. “Both Federal and State Governments
are becoming increasingly concerned about
this small seabird, as the populations around
Australia are crashing - we’ve lost around
75 per cent in the last 40 years,” Dr Woehler
said. “Unless this trend halts soon, the
species will become endangered.”
Following the talk, and an extended
question/answer session, Dr Woehler
presented Margaret Bennett with her BirdLife
Australia Distinguished Service Award in
recognition of her outstanding contribution
to conserving King Island’s birds and their
habitats.
KAROLIN MACGREGOR
THERE is 昀椀nally some good
news for livestock producers
with markets for both lamb and
beef expected to strengthen next
year.
Market outlook reports from
Rural Bank say Tasmania’s
cattle prices are likely to continue to rise throughout the
昀椀rst half of 2024, capitalising
on the strong growth during
November.
The bank says strength in
export demand is expected to
provide a marginal boost to
cattle prices, however the dry
weather outlook may apply
downwards pressure on prices.
Lamb markets are also
expected to strengthen in 2024
as the surge in supply eases.
The bank says increased processing capacity and softer retail
prices are expected to see a lift
in domestic consumption.
However, the outlook is for
warm and dry weather in the
new year, will continue to limit
restocker con昀椀dence and restrict

Australia Distinguished Service Award.

the uplift in prices.
The report says Australian cattle prices should trend
higher during the 昀椀rst half of
2024 after experiencing significant declines throughout 2023.
Locally an improvement
in seasonal conditions after
recent rain, combined with better market outlooks has helped
increase demand and lift prices
at recent Tasmanian store cattle
sales.
Rural Bank says greater opportunities for exports in key markets
will be the driving force supporting improved prices.
However, the dry weather
outlook in key cattle producing
regions could limit any strong
price growth.
Across the country beef production is forecast to lift eight
per cent during the 昀椀rst half of
2024.
This will place output well
above the 昀椀ve-year average and
the increase comes on the back
of strong cattle availability on
local markets as the herd rebuild
reaches maturity.
